Metaphor of a Flitting Hummingbird
The hummingbird is a beautiful metaphor of hope, perseverance, bliss, and living in the present moment. They show us that it is possible to achieve the impossible with clear goals, structured actions, and perseverance.
The behaviour of hummingbirds becomes a metaphor for coping with chaos, stress and life in general. “ Standing still” refers to the bird’s ability to hover, enabled by an oversized heart, while extracting nutritious nectar from beautiful flowers. The ability to employ it’s heart-driven strength to stay focused in the present moment, and on the work at hand, that is, extracting the life-sustaining nectar. It’s about self-sufficiency and following one’s heart.
Hummingbirds symbolize vibrance and variety… they come in a vibrant array of jewel-like colours themselves and are also associated with the colourful flowers from which they get nectar and help pollinate. The hummingbird, thus reminds us to welcome diversity in our lives and to honour the richness of variety and keep evolving. Imagine, if the hummingbird didn't visit multiple blossoms, it would limit their capacity to pollinate more flowers, thus hindering growth. If we feel stuck in some way, or we don't have answers, hummingbirds remind us to do something different as we might stumble upon our answer.
The hummingbird symbolizes stability and agility . It possesses special flying skills. Even in extremely windy conditions, they can stabilize themselves in midair while feeding. Here, agility is not about speed, but being able to seize the moment wherever you find yourself. They remind us to focus on the present moment instead of resisting challenges.
Hummingbirds are very small birds and remind us that although we may feel small or insignificant at times, one person can have a big impact as long as we focus on the task at hand and do it well. Hummingbirds remind us to use our positive energy to achieve our goals.
These nectar-drinking birds are reminders to live la dolce vita - the sweet life. Life can be hard on the earthly plane. Yet the hummingbird, with their vibrant, humming presence, reminds us to focus on the joy in life, that good luck happens when you are receptive and open to the wonders in life. When we live in a joyful state, it’s easier for good luck to find us, or we can also say that when we are aligned to our true self, it is easier to find that deep state of bliss within us.
“ When you can go neither backward or forward, when you discover you are no longer able to stand, sit, or lie down, when you are convinced all the exits are blocked, either you take to believing in miracles or you stand still like the hummingbird. The miracle is that the honey is always there, right under your nose, only you were too busy searching elsewhere to realize it. The worst is not death but being blind, blind to the fact that everything about life is in the nature of the miraculous.” ----- Henry Miller
